What is a stringer?

The stringer is the structural element that supports the treads of a staircase. Its position and form determine how the staircase looks and how it interacts with the surrounding space. There are two fundamental approaches: the central stringer and the side stringer.

The central stringer

A single structural spine runs up the centre of the staircase, with treads cantilevering out from both sides. This is the hallmark of the LONDON and TORINO models.

Advantages

  • Visual lightness - without lateral stringers, the staircase appears to float. Light passes beneath the treads; the room feels more open.
  • Space efficiency - the central spine occupies minimal floor area.
  • Design impact - the central spine is architecturally bold. It becomes a feature in its own right.
  • Easier placement - a central stringer can stand freely in a room, without needing to be fixed to a side wall.

Disadvantages

  • Requires precise engineering - the cantilever loads on the treads must be carefully calculated.
  • Less suitable for very wide staircases (over 100 cm) without additional support.

The side stringer

One or two structural elements run along the sides of the staircase, with treads sitting between or on top of them. This is the more traditional approach, seen in models such as MANHATTAN, SCALA and RUSTIC.

Advantages

  • Greater load capacity - side stringers distribute weight across a wider base, ideal for wider staircases.
  • More tread options - curved treads, alternating (samba) treads and winder configurations are more easily achieved with side stringers.
  • Familiar aesthetics - suitable for traditional, rustic or classic interiors.

Disadvantages

  • Visually heavier - the staircase feels more solid and occupies more visual space.
  • Typically requires more floor footprint.

Which is right for your space?

  • Modern, minimalist interior with open plan - central stringer. LONDON or TORINO.
  • Compact space, duplex apartment - side stringer with alternating treads. SCALA or VELORA.
  • Industrial or contemporary urban style - MANHATTAN or CYVA.
  • Rustic, traditional, country house - side stringer in solid wood. RUSTIC.
  • Very limited footprint (under 1 m2) - central stringer compact or semi-spiral. SIENA or LUMIA.

Conclusion

There is no universal answer to which is better - only which is better for your specific space, style and use. At SCALUX, we offer both approaches across our range, so you can always find the solution that matches your architecture without compromise.
